An Analysis of YCS Anaheim

The top 16 decks of the players at YCS Anaheim were extremely diverse probably the most diverse ever seen.
here they are for those who didn't see yet: "The Top 16 tally is 4 Gravekeepers, 2 Miracle Fusion / Gemini Decks, 2 Six Samurai, 2 X-Sabers, 1 LIGHT Gemini, 1 Gladiator Beast, 1 Absolute Zero, 1 Chaos Deck, 1 Dragunity Deck, and a ChaosPlantSynchro Deck!" As quoted from (http://www.konami.com/yugioh/blog/?p=5589)

The most common is Gravekeepers due to obviously how strong the deck is and how cheap it is to build now so many people brought it...  There are other more in depth reasons but that's not what I'm here to discuss. Read More to see what I am discussing.
4 GK
3 Hero Beat (That's what the Light Gemini and Miracle Fusion Gemini decks are (Only a few card difference)
2 SS
2 Saber
1 GB
1 Absolute Zero
1 Salvo Chaos
1 Dragunity
1 Chaos Plant

Right off the bat you see the dilemma we are having... 13 Control based decks... (4 GK, 3 Hero Beat, 2 SS, Saber, 1 GB, 1 Dragunity) and 3 standard Synchro beatdown decks.

The surprise is the top 8

2 GK
2 Hero Beat (Light Gemini still there)
1 Saber
1 Absolute Zero
1 Salvo Chaos
1 Chaos Plant

See what happened... 5 Control based decks... and still 3 Synchro beatdown decks... Now the dilemma is gone... (Note: this is the second i think YCS after March 1st list)

The next is the top 4

1 GK
1 Light Gemini
1 Salvo Chaos
1 Saber

Now this is the best part 3 Control based decks and 1 Synchro Beatdown....

The top 2

GK vs Light Gemini

This is fun Control vs Control...

Control decks are extremely popular due to their inherently low monster counts allowing for more and more space for Traps so that the plays they make consistently due to heavy searching are heavily protected while lowering opportunities for dead draws.

Winner Light Gemini...

So you see that Control is doing a bit too well nowadays. I think what needs to be done to fix this is not to bring back Heavy Storm but to print one more cards like Giant Trunade or Mystical Space Typhoon that can be mained in any deck with little to no drawbacks that isn't Heavy Storm (Destruction is what makes it greatness).

A card like:
Solemn Twister
Spell Card
Remove all Spell/Trap Cards on the field from play. Your opponent can set 1 Spell/Trap Card from their Deck face-down and can activate it this turn. You can only activate this card once per duel.

It is just like Heavy Storm and is automatically at one. But it isn't as debilitating as Heavy Storm or Cold Wave. But you can still fight back from the removal instead of getting OTK'ed... Also this card would remove from play so that you can't Defend against it as Sams or Starlight Road. It stops your OTK but also means you can set Solemn Judgment to stop your opponents trap. If a card somewhat like this were made we would no longer need Heavy Storm to come back because we would have a card that.

But alas with Psychic Shockwave on the way we may no longer need to print a card like Solemn Twister (I made it up of course).

Even then Jinzo is vulnerable to spell and monster based removal... Gravekeepers laugh at him... Light Gemini laughs at him... Sams laugh at him... Dragunities laugh heavily at him.

So what are your thoughts on this Control heavy format? In other words the format where the only way to play Yugioh is to lucksack completely (Yugioh is a game where the tide of battle shifts... in control that doesn't happen much outside of really lucky pulls that don't get negated outright)

See you all tomorrow and I hope you all had a good day.

  1. Control deck format means more thinking, instead of just herpderp-standardcombo-otk.
yugioh is a thinking game, and also a psychological game using our backrows(and to some extent our hand cards *points to veiler & honest*)
and giant trunade/cold wave/heavy storm just totally kills the psychological aspect. Which sucks really.
Control decks aren't autopilot, sometimes you'll need to do the weirdest but smartest stuff to actually win.

  2. I favor control, but I'm not happy with GKs still around. I'm surprised Sams didn't do better.

  3. I have literally typed over 2 paragraphs for this comment 4 times to get the answer I want... and end with this... I like control it is fun and makes duels interesting like the show but at the same time it takes away from the game in that the game was based on sudden turnarounds (also like the show)... in control those are rare and hard to get.
