So your friend has shown interest in your card game of choice most likely yugioh well don't jump the gun and explain anything more than turn order and phase order.
Have them watch this once or twice depending on if they understand or not.
Step 2: Give them a copy of the rulebook and a starter deck (can be homemade) and have them read or scan over the rulebook
Step 3: Have them use their starter deck to demonstrate every section of the rulebook possible (Summoning, Phases, Chains, etc.)
Step 4: Use and equally simple deck hopefully a second starter deck and duel them.
Step 5: Duel until they make no more illegal moves and don't bring up misplays
Step 6: Bring up really obvious misplays after each duel from then on until they make them less often.
Step 7: Begin your favorite deck building process with them by helping them build what they like.
Step 8: Play, Play, Play keeping playing until they know how their deck works like the back of their hand (Yes you use a starter deck while they get a real one).
Step 9: Use your real deck and destroy their life completely (If you lose first try you did great at teaching)
Step 10: Keep destroying their life until they beat you not just win but beat like outplay.
Step 11: You have now raised a complete and utter amateur (Unless they consistently beat you in which case you might want to reevaluate your skill level).
Step 12: Bring him to your local every week until he starts working on getting better to beat the local people.
Step 13: FINAL TEST: take him to a regional or YCS and teach him how to trade and don't expect him to do well. but make sure he watches duels after he is finished his rounds.
Step 14: You now have a yugimons partner good job.
